Tamil Nadu`s electricity demand is expected to reach 19,000 MW in the coming days, as per officials of the Electricity Board. The current power requirement is between 16,500 MW and 17,500 MW, which has steadily increased from 11,285 MW in 2011 to 18,882 MW on April 18, 2023.
To meet the increasing demand, the state government has diversified its power sources, including thermal, funnel power plants, wind farms, solar power plants, and long and medium term purchase agreements.

During peak power generation periods, surplus power is given to other states under the transfer system. Despite these efforts, the demand for electricity continues to grow, and officials have already projected a potential increase from 17,000 MW to 18,100 MW in April. The government is committed to providing adequate electricity supply to the state during the summer peak power demand.
