On Akshaya Trithiyai, there were teeming crowds in all the jewelry shops. It is reported that over the two-day occasion of Akshaya Trithiyai, more than 20 tons of gold were sold!
The occasion of Akshaya Trithiyai for the current year (2023) commenced at 7:30 AM on Saturday (22nd April) and concluded at 7:47 AM yesterday morning (Sunday, 23rd April).
There are more than 35,000 jewelry shops in Tamil Nadu. In Chennai Metro City alone, there are more than 6,000 jewelry shops! Large crowds gathered in these shops over the last 2 days on the occasion of Akshaya Trithiyai, as per the traditional belief that buying gold on this occasion will bring prosperity to the family! On the 2nd day (Sunday, 23rd April), the jewelry shops opened early in the morning.
As the stock exchanges were closed on the weekend, the price of gold remained the same as on Saturday (22nd April). Accordingly, 1 gram of gold was sold at Rs. 5,605, and 1 sovereign was sold at Rs. 44,840/-. 24-carat gold was sold at Rs. 48,472 per sovereign.
As the gold price was lower on the sacred occasion of Akshaya Trithiyai, the jewelry buyers were delighted.
In this regard, the General Secretary of the Chennai Gold and Jewelry Traders Association, N. Sarathkumar, shared: “As Akshaya Trithiyai was celebrated over 2 days this year, jewelry buying crowds were quite large over both days! As the price of gold was down by Rs. 480/- per sovereign, the public was delighted and bought jewelry items. Compared to last year, sales increased by 10-15% this year!”
Regarding the sales of jewelry items, it is reported on behalf of the jewelry shop owners that around 20 tons of gold jewelry items were sold!
